Maintaining pool chemical set points

water-testingHaving a pool in your yard provides many benefits but there also some difficulties that are associated with it. Provided you keep up with the chemicals in the pool and clean it regularly, however, you can enjoy all that it has to offer. Of course, you can contact Medallion Pools to test your chemicals on a periodic basis and make sure that the chemical set points are being met. Here is some basic information on some the chemicals in the pool that need to maintain a level for optimum benefits.

Chlorine - There are several things that need to be considered with the chlorine in the pool. One of those issues is the free chlorine, which shows how much chlorine is available for the sanitary usage of the pool. This is something that should be tested and added on a regular basis, unless an automated chlorine feeder is used. Free chlorine is used when it breaks down material in your pool that is organic in nature and the sunlight also uses some of the chlorine.

Another issue that needs to be considered with chlorine is combined chlorine. This is something that is produced while the chlorine is breaking down the organic material in the pool and sanitizing it. When you smell chlorine, you actually smell combined chlorine. You should check the combined chlorine level regularly to determine if the correct chemical set point is being met.

One other issue that needs to be considered with your chlorine level is the total chlorine. This is the combination of combined chlorine and free chlorine which is often tested with the use of an inexpensive test kit. It should be noted, you should have it tested professionally to ensure that all of the chlorine levels are being met properly.

Other Chemical Set Points

PH balance - The alkalinity and acidity of the water should be tested on a regular basis with a pH test. Maintaining a proper pH level helps to increase the comfort of using the pool and also reduces chlorine usage, so that those levels are maintained properly. If you have low pH levels, it can be increased by adding soda ash or borax. Reducing the pH of the pool is possible with the use of muriatic acid and other chemicals that may be available commercially.

Total alkalinity - When checking your pool chemical levels, total alkalinity will also need to be considered. This number indicates how well your water is able to buffer changes in the pH level. Maintaining the proper total alkalinity level is possible by adding chemicals to either reduce it or increase it, as is necessary.
